Fatima’s Frankincense sells Royal Green Hojari frankincense. Frankincense is native to the rocky mountain lands of Oman and the frankincense, or olibanum tree. Royal Green Hojari is considered to be the highest grade of frankincense in the world and comes from the boswellia sacra tree (also known as boswellia carteri).
The boswellia sacra tree is a small tree and typically grows between 6 feet and 26 feet tall and has one or more trunk. The bark of the tree has the texture of paper and can easily be removed. The tree has compound leaves and an odd number of leaflets which grow opposite to one another. Frankincense trees start to produce resin when they are about 8 to 10 years old. The resin is harvested by making a shallow incision on the trunk or branches and the resin is drained as a milky substance. When the resin is in contact with the air, it coagulates and is collected by hand. Growing conditions impact the types of resin produced and Omani resins are created in large tears, making it very high quality resin.
Royal Green Hojari (Hojari is a tribute to the Hajar Mountains) is considered one of the highest grades of frankincense in the world and its tears are white, yellow, amber, and pale green in color. The green resin is the highest quality and comes from a frankincense tree that only produces this color only once or twice a year - this means that a lot of frankincense must be harvested in order to get even a small amount of Royal Green Hojari. It is one of the more rare harvests of frankincense and involves many women in the community coming together to sort the frankincense by size, shape, and color. Light green frankincense has a beautiful color and may be coated in white or change color over time. The color shift doesn’t mean the quality changes, but the hues fluctuate from light to dark based on climatic changes and shifting to the environment it's in.
Royal Green Hojari has unique chemical properties, including the most oils of any grade of Frankincense, average about 9-10% and a high content of Boswellic acid and up to 80% alpha-pinene. This grade is also typically made of 30-36% water soluble gum. Scent notes: sweet, pine, citrus, amber, and mint.
